Broad spectrum artificial light at night increases the conspicuousness of camouflaged prey

چکیده
The growing global prevalence of energy efficient broad spectrum lighting threatens to disrupt an array visually guided ecological processes. Broad likely better enables the discrimination colour, yet it is potential increase conspicuousness camouflaged prey at night remains little explored. Using a well-established visual model, we quantified impacts four spectrally distinct narrow and technologies on three different polymorphic colour variations intertidal littorinid snail, as viewed by model predators. Modern increased compared 20th-century lighting. This effect was most prominent in yellow morphs due greater contrast with their natural fucoid seaweed background. Synthesis applications. Our results provide evidence that transition will decrease efficacy camouflage nature, potentially altering selective predation, population dynamics genetic structure populations. These findings highlight need for further consideration environmental management planning, ensure habitats are protected from unnecessary exposure artificial light.

daughters. However, our finding that α α-males sired their daughters' offspring less frequently than non-daughters' offspring remains highly significant when the analysis is restricted to the 34 offspring known to have been born to non first time mothers (Fisher's exact p = 0.0003). A third alternative explanation for our findings is that father–daughter matings are not avoided, but when they ...
متن کاملArtificial light at night advances avian reproductive physiology.
Artificial light at night is a rapidly increasing phenomenon and it is presumed to have global implications. Light at night has been associated with health problems in humans as a consequence of altered biological rhythms. Effects on wild animals have been less investigated, but light at night has often been assumed to affect seasonal cycles of urban dwellers. Using light loggers attached to fr...
متن کاملArtificial Light at Night and Cancer: Global Study
Background: Artificial light at night (ALAN) has been linked to increased risk of cancers in body sites like the breast and colorectum. However exposure of ALAN as an environmental risk factor and its relation to cancers in humans has never been studied in detail. Objective: To explore the association of ALAN with all forms of cancers in 158 countries. Materials and Methods: An ecological study...
متن کاملArtificial night light alters nocturnal prey interception outcomes for morphologically variable spiders
Artificial night light has the potential to significantly alter visually-dependent species interactions. However, examples of disruptions of species interactions through changes in light remain rare and how artificial night light may alter predator-prey relationships are particularly understudied. In this study, we examined whether artificial night light could impact prey attraction and interce...
متن کاملEffect of the Artificial Night with Facilitated Tucking and Artificial Night Alone on the Physiological Indices of Premature Infants
Background: Preterm birth and admission to neonatal intensive care unit as stressors can cause physiologicalinstability that may lead to prolong hospitalization and mortality. This study aimed to determine the effect of artificialnights and facilitated tucking on the physiological indices of premature infants. Methods: This randomized clinical trial was conducted on 60 preterm ...
